5. UNIT ORGRANIZATION/ REPSONIBILITES, RANKS, AND PROMOTIONS
a. UNIT ORGANIZATION AND RESPONSIBILITES. The unit task organization will resemble a rifle company command that consists of company level leadership and each period represents a rifle platoon and a headquarters platoon. The following ranks (with corresponding billets) are utilized, depending on the size of the unit. Task Organization is limited to Cadet enrollment.
(1) Headquarters Platoon consist of:
(a) Cadet Company Commander: The Company Commander is responsible for everything the company does or fails to do. The CO is held accountable for the training, efficiency, discipline, administration, and welfare of the company.
(b) Cadet Company Executive Officer: The Company Executive Officer is 2nd in command of the company. The XO performs such duties as are assigned by the CO and serves as the coordinator of all company staff activities. He/she will assume command of the company in the absence of the CO.
(c) Cadet Company First Sergeant: The First Sergeant is the senior enlisted member of the company. He/she assists the CO by performing such duties as may be assigned. The First Sergeant is the principal enlisted assistant to the CO in supervising the administration of the company.
(d) Cadet Company Gunnery Sergeant: The Gunnery Sergeant is responsible for unit logistics and coordinating training with the Executive Officer. He/she is directed to assist the First Sergeant as directed and mentors the Platoon Sergeants.
(e) Cadet Company Guide: The Company Guide assists the First Sergeant and Company Gunnery Sergeant as directed.
(2) Platoons consist of:
(a) Platoon Commander: The Platoon Commander is responsible for everything the platoon does or fails to do. He/she is held accountable for the training, efficiency, discipline, administration, and welfare of the platoon.
(b) Cadet Platoon Sergeant: The Platoon Sergeant is 2nd in command of the platoon and performs those duties assigned by the Platoon Leader. The Platoon Sergeant assumes command of the platoon in the absence of the Platoon Leader. He/she assists in all aspects of the supervision and control of the platoon.
(c) Cadet Platoon Guide: The Platoon Guide is 3rd in command of the platoon and assists the Platoon Commander and Platoon Sergeant as directed.
(d) Cadet Squad Leaders: The Squad Leader assists the Platoon Leader and Platoon Sergeant in all activities of the platoon.
(e) Cadet Fire Team Leader: The Squad Leader assists the Platoon Leader and Platoon Sergeant in all activities of the platoon.
b. CADET RANK STRUCTURE. The rank structure used in Marine Corps JROTC is mirrored after the officer and enlisted ranks in the U. S. Marine Corps.
(1) Cadet Captain
(2) Cadet First Lieutenant
(3) Cadet Second Lieutenant
(4) Cadet First Sergeant
(5) Cadet Gunnery Sergeant
(6) Cadet Staff Sergeant
(7) Cadet Sergeant
(8) Cadet Corporal
(9) Cadet Lance Corporal
(10) Cadet Private First Class
(11) Cadet Private
c. CADET PROMOTIONS. Promotions are an honor and a privilege. Those cadets receiving promotions must possess the prerequisite abilities and skills. Primary authority for promotions rests with the Senior Marine Instructor.
(1) Cadet Officers and Senior Noncommissioned Officers (SNCO). Cadets are promoted and selected for unit assignments based on demonstrated performance and academic excellence. Continued enthusiasm, active support of and participation in the MCJROTC program, a positive attitude, and demonstrated leadership skills are required of the Cadet in order for appointment to a leadership position. Cadet Officers and Senior NCOs are expected to set the example for their subordinates. Extra effort and time will be required for these billets.
(2) All ranks can be promoted meritoriously based on demonstrated leadership ability, academic, and commitment to the program.
(3) Promotion requirements by rank:
(a) Nonrates during freshman and sophomore years
Private First Class. After fall semester with 2.0 GPA, B in MCJROTC, and no disciplinary infractions.
2. Lance Corporal. After spring semester with 2.0 GPA, B in MCJROTC, no disciplinary infractions, and pass Knowledge Test with 80%.
(b) Noncommissioned officer ranks during sophomore year
Corporal. Must have 2.5 GPA, B in MCJROTC, no disciplinary infractions, and pass Knowledge Test with 90%.
Sergeant. Must be top (4) in platoon in leadership capabilities, 2.5 GPA, B in MCJROTC, no disciplinary infractions, pass Knowledge Test with 95%, and conduct platoon formation, inspection, and physical training.
(c) Staff noncommissioned officer ranks are selected by instructors during junior year
1. Staff Sergeant. Must be number two in platoon in leadership capabilities Must have 2.5 GPA, A in MCJROTC, no disciplinary infractions, pass Knowledge Test with 90%, and conduct platoon formation, inspection, and physical training.
2. Gunnery Sergeant. Must have 2.5 GPA, A in MCJROTC, no disciplinary infractions, pass Knowledge Test with 90%, and conduct platoon formation, inspection, and physical training.
3. First Sergeant. Must have 3.0 GPA, A in MCJROTC, no disciplinary infractions, pass Knowledge Test with 90%, and conduct platoon formation, inspection, and physical training.
(d) Commission Officers are promoted to commissioned officer ranks are selected by instructors during senior year.
1. Second Lieutenant. Must have 3.0 GPA, A in MCJROTC, no disciplinary infractions, pass Knowledge Test with 90%, and conduct platoon formation, inspection, and physical training.
2. First Lieutenant. Must have 3.0 GPA, A in MCJROTC, no disciplinary infractions, pass Knowledge Test with 90%, and conduct platoon formation, inspection, and physical training.
3. Captain. Must have 3.0 GPA, A in MCJROTC, no disciplinary infractions, pass Knowledge Test with 90%, and conduct platoon formation, inspection, and physical training.
(4) Cadets failing to perform their duties in an efficient manner will be considered for reduction.
(5) Requests for waivers to the above promotion criteria will be submitted to the Senior Military Instructor.
(a) Reappointment
1. Cadets who departed for disciplinary reasons or were withdrawn in lieu of disciplinary action, and accepted for reenrollment will be appointed Cadet Privates, regardless of rank previously held.
2. Cadets who departed for other reasons and accepted for reenrollment may be appointed to a grade one rank lower than that previously held if absence from the program was a period of one school year or less. Periods greater than one school year will normally result in a returning rank of Cadet Private.
